I begin by gathering all of my decorating supplies. I rarely use everything, but I always have more jars, candles, baskets, ribbons, etc. to supplement my supplies.

This year I decided to base my fall decorations on raffia and terra cotta pots. This raffia has been maturing in my decoration box for a couple of years, so this year it was time to put it to use.

I started by braiding one of the packs of raffia, simply because it was so hard to work with. I thought a braid would make it easier to handle.

Once I had a braid, I looped it around to make a wreath, and noticed that I could easily make it into a heart shape.

I first tied the ends together using a light brown raffia, then chose an accent color. Normally, my fall decor is Everything Orange with Occasional Green, so I chose to go a different direction with A Bit of Purple.

To make a heart shape, I pinched the top middle together, and twisted a paper clip into it. I liked the rough look, but if you want it to be a more stable heart, you can weave some wire through the whole braid and bend it into shape.

Almost done! I reduced the purple raffia to a small bow in order to keep the accent from overwhelming the actual wreath.

Fishing line is a decorator's best friend! Since my heart would not hold its shape if the line were tied at the top, I threaded the line through the back of the knot at the bottom...

...and then up through the paperclip at the top. I hang decorations over a door by putting an upside down hook on the back of the door, then looping the fishing line around it and over the top of the door.

And done!

For my door, I just added another few strands of purple raffia to the placemat "wreath" I made a couple of years ago. I love this wreath because it is so easy to redecorate based on the season!

A few other decorations... It will probably change over the next few months :)
