Calprotectin ist ein antimikrobielles Enzym, das in neutrophilen Granulozyten in hoher Konzentrationen vorkommt. Entsprechend korreliert seine Konzentration im Stuhl mit der Anzahl Granulozyten im Darmlumen und dem Entzündungsausmass.

Erhöhte Calprotectin-Werte im Stuhl weisen auf eine akute oder chronische Entzündung hin, oder allenfalls eine Neoplasie oder Mukoviszidose.
